It’s time for a reset. On Dec 23 (2:16 AM pt) a new moon punctuates the final days of the year. This potent turning point can expand your vision of what’s possible, and set you free in 2023. There’s a new beginning around the corner.
According to Vedic Astrology, this new moon falls in Mula, the “foundation star,” that’s known for its destructive and reconstructive effect. If you’ve been holding on to the past or uncertain of your next move, use this time to cut cords and let go of what is no longer supporting you.

Coincidently, this powerful new moon falls just a day after the solstice (Dec 21/22) — the first day of winter in the northern hemisphere, and the tipping point between darkness and light on earth. Since this new moon falls in the dynamic solstice portal, it comes with an extra blast of spiritual energy to reset and renew itself.
The night before the new moon (dark moon) is the darkest part the lunar cycle, and the Winter Solstice (Dec 21/22) is the darkest night of the year. A deep dive into the inner-mind can reveal hidden information, and shine an intuitive light onto your past and future now. Take a moment to slow down, light a candle, meditate or pray. Try writing what you are ready to let go of on piece of paper, then burn it or dissolve it into water.
On the Winter Solstice, the sun is said to die and be reborn. In Vedic astrology, the winter solstice is the first day of Uttarayana, the sun’s 6-month journey northward when the days grow longer. In the Mahabharata, Bhishma prolonged his death until the Winter Solstice so that he could leave his body on this blessed day.
Something in your life may be dying or ending now, but a new light of insight is also born on this new moon. With an expansive influence of Saraswati Yoga, the goddess of education and the arts, this new moon has a special blessing for starting education and artistic projects.
Take heed, Mercury will turn retrograde on December 29, which may slow down the momentum, and call for revisions of intentions. Mercury Retrograde is a time to look back at where you’ve been, reconnect with old friends, and revise plans. With Mars also retrograde, communication and travel may be especially chaotic over the New Year.
The upcoming solstice and new moon can open a gateway to a new realm, and help you sever unconscious attachments to needless pain and suffering. What are you ready to upgrade as we step forward into 2023?
