It’s time to get real. The new moon of March 6 (8:04 am PT) is on the edge of an important shift in consciousness and marks a powerful turning point for those who seek truth and clarity. If you’re ready for an emotional re-set, this is the perfect time for recalibration.  Try a new way to tell your story and envision your future now.

The new moon will be in the area of the sky called Purva Bhadrapada, a fiery star that elevates consciousness.  Symbolized by the front legs of a stretcher or coffin as it carries a body to the cremation grounds, Purva Bhadrapda is the star of death, rebirth, and the power to see beyond illusion.

On the evening of March 4 in India, Maha Shivaratri will be celebrated. This is an all-night vigil of fasting, ritual and singing of sacred mantras to Lord Shiva.

In the Hindu trinity, Brahma is the Creator, Vishnu the sustainer, and Shiva is the destroyer. Sometimes depicted in a wild dance of destruction, Lord Shiva is also seen as the consummate yogi seated in quiet meditation.

Change is inevitable and the past is a cancelled check. Lord Shiva is fond of dancing in cremation grounds and cemeteries, where he smears his body with the ashes of the dead, and liberates the souls of the departed. This new moon can elevate awareness of life’s impermanent and ever-changing nature.  Take an inventory now on how you spend the precious days you’ve been allotted here on earth.

Celebrated as the liberator of karmic entanglements, it’s said that Lord Shiva can reduce the bonds of negative habits and beliefs to ashes in a single glance.  On Shivarati, prayers, intention setting, as well as chanting the mantra Om Namah Shivaya can alter the laws of destiny and break stubborn karmic ties.

Mercury Retrograde

On March 5 (10:19 am PT), Mercury will station retrograde in the murky waters of sidereal Pisces.  Clarity seeking Mercury is dazed by the dreamy world of Pisces. Decision making may seem more challenging as he goes retrograde, and important ideas may seem to get diluted or lost in translation.

While Mercury Retrograde is often frustrating, with detours and traffic delays, it also allows for careful review and improvement.  New clarity in how we process information now, will make for easier communication in the future. Mercury goes direct on March 28.

Rahu and Ketu enter Gemini and Sagittarius

On March 6 (about 12 hours after the new moon) a very important shift is occurring. The shadow planets, Rahu and Ketu, will change signs for the first time in over a year and a half.

Rahu and Ketu are the head and tail of the karmic eclipse snake, and the invisible nodal axis where the transformative influence of the eclipse shadow falls. Rahu and Ketu always move together, so whenever Rahu changes signs, Ketu does too.

Where the shadow snake goes, personal ambitions, drive, and the power of fate soon follow. For the next 18 months Rahu will sink his jaws into the sign of Gemini where advances in communication, commerce, and intellectual pursuits will expand at a quickening pace.

Ketu’s transit in Sagittarius signals powerful shifts around spiritual beliefs, religion, and ethics around the world.  Even greater awakenings are in store after April 29 when stern Saturn goes retrograde and joins the transformative influence of Pluto and the shadow snake, Ketu. This volatile conjunction may wreak havoc on old and out-of-date systems and structures, especially ones that are out of touch with our true needs.

Depending on where Rahu and Ketu transit your birth chart, desire and/or confusion can arise, as well as sudden and surprising changes. How this affects you on a personal level depends on many unique factors in your astrology chart.
