The new moon of Jan. 2nd (10:34 am PST) launches 2022 with a spark of renewal. There’s a growing regenerative energy hidden within this new moon, and tuning into it can help you reset your heart and mind. Seize this time to look within, recharge, and envision your year ahead.
This new moon falls in the area of the sky called Purva Ashadha, which contains the stars that represent the bow of Sagittarius (the archer), as he aims his arrow into the galactic center.
In Vedic Astrology, Purva Ashadha is symbolized by an elephant tusk, and is connected to the Hindu elephant god, Ganesha, who’s revered as the “Remover of Obstacles.” Purva Ashadha can remove stubborn blockages, and energize New Year’s resolutions.
This area of the sky (known as a nakshatra) has a deep and primordial connection to the power of water, as it is ruled by the ancient water goddesses known as Apas. These are the goddesses of pure spring waters that flow down from the mountains in rivers, purifying and nourishing the earth on their way towards the sea.

The goddesses of the waters also wash away the past, nourish new hopes, and heal relationships. The ever-renewing spirit of Apas empowers this new moon cycle to ignite 2022 with hope, determination and grace.
Simultaneously, this new moon is aligned with Venus, the planet of love and connectivity. Venus is retrograde and rapidly transforming now, as she transitions from evening star to morning star. This process requires her to disappear into the sun, surrender and ultimately die to her past.
During Venus’s retrograde cycle, matters of commitment, heartbreak, money and self-expression come forward to be reviewed and reprocessed. This is a highly auspicious time to bring hidden issues to the light of consciousness, and cut toxic cords.
On this new moon, expansive Jupiter will enter the nakshatra of Shabhisha, the star of “100 healers.” Knowledge of health and healing will increase in the months to come, and innovative medical discoveries are likely. Jupiter in Shatabhisa can also unveil hidden information to the public and expand scientific understanding.
Take heed, the influence of Kala Sarpa Yoga (Serpent of Time) continues to amplify the power of collective destiny until April. Kala Sarpa Yoga is said to awaken Naga dragons, the primal life force and ancient wisdom that resides within the earth itself. This potent, yet destabilizing influence, creates shocking events and uncertainty, but it can also accelerate positive change.
