If you’ve recently been tangled up by complications, or lost in the dark, there’s a light around the corner. A powerful lunar cycle of retrospection and healing is up ahead.
The new moon of Aug 4 coincides with Mercury Retrograde and sets a new stage for retrospective insight and transformative growth.
The new moon is in a mysterious nakshatra called Ashlesha, the snake star. Anchored in the watery realm of Cancer, this oceanic star is linked to the past, the subconscious, and realms of subtle awareness.

Ashlesha is a highly sensitive star, that magnifies the power of medicines, foods and toxins. There’s a quality of insight and wisdom that comes with this new moon, so listen to your body and be particularly vigilant about dosage and timing of medicines.
Mercury will be retrograde from Aug 4 – 28, bringing in challenges of timing, delays, missed connections, and mishaps. The Mercury Retrograde shadow (tracing of future retrograde degrees) began on July 16 and has accompanied the mass IT outage that has hit airports, businesses and broadcasters around the world.
Mercury is likely to continue to cause trouble, especially later this month, as it crosses a key transitional point called the gandanta, “the karmic knot” on August 21. Consider what knots you might benefit from untangling at this time, be they ties to situations, people, habits, or knots within your own psyche.
Despite its challenges, Mercury Retrograde is an excellent time for review, and this new moon can kick you back into unfinished business and old friendships. It can also be a great time to revisit old ideas with a fresh perspective. Sometimes seeing things from a new angle is enough to transform old storylines and beliefs.
Consider something you are reexamining in your mind and invite a new light of insight into it. The Ashlesha New Moon/Mercury Retrograde begins a process of visionary review, whether it’s in the realm of relationships or personal growth, a special light of awareness is growing in the weeks to come.
How these planetary transits affect you personally depends on your birth chart. Book a Vedic Astrology reading to learn more.
