Center yourself and connect in with your heart. The new moon of Dec 17, 2017 (10:30 pm PT) opens a dark portal to an underground realm of shadow and mystery. This is the darkest new moon of the year (in the northern hemisphere) and a potent time to explore shadows, as well as reconnect to the light of truth that dwells within.
The new moon falls in the area of the sky known in Vedic astrology as Mula nakshatra – the root star. Marking the “stinger” in the tail of the constellation of Scorpio and situated close to a massive black hole in the center of our galaxy, Mula is said to hold great spiritual power.

Ruled by the untamed Goddess, Nirriti, who represents chaos and dissolution, she holds the fatal venom of the Scorpio’s sting. Nirriti lives in the kingdom of the dead, and like the goddess Kali, she uproots and weeds out what is unnecessary, leaving behind a fertile bed of possibility.
Furthermore, all the visible planets in the sky are now under the transformational influence of the shadow serpent, Kala Sarpa Yoga – The Serpent of Time. When the moon is in it’s dark half, all the planets are enclosed between Rahu, the serpent’s head, and Ketu, the tail. Kala Sarpa Yoga causes an acceleration of karma that can shift mass consciousness, often by challenging social norms. The onslaught of sexual misconduct charges in media and politics has magnified under its pressure, as it pushes for higher consciousness in personal and political power dynamics. Kala Sarpa Yoga has been activated since mid-September and will continue through January of 2018.
Because this new moon asks us to look beyond the material realm, this would not be a good time to lend or invest money. Take the day off of holiday shopping and business to focus on getting to the root of happiness in your life. New moons are an excellent time to clear away stagnate energy, clean out closets and shelves, and donate items to local charities or food shelves. Mula new moon upholds a great truth: that the nature of this world is impermanent and we are meant to find our power by sharing and flowing with it.
If you have been feeling low on energy, remember that the winter solstice is coming up on Dec 21. This is the longest night of the year and the time when the sun is weakest in the northern hemisphere. Introversion, along with decreased enthusiasm, is entirely natural as the light of the sun declines in power. This new moon may be particularly fatiguing because weighty Saturn is also conjoined it, further inhibiting the sun’s ambitious and expressive light, and creating a realistic, yet doubtful, mood. Try to take it easy on yourself and get plenty of rest at this time.
On the winter solstice, the sun is said to be reborn and the days begin to lengthen again. In Vedic astrology, the winter solstice is the first day of Uttarayana, the sun’s 6-month journey northward, and is the auspicious light of dawn for the gods. In the Mahabharata, Bhimsa prolonged his death until the winter solstice so he could die in the blessed time of Uttarayana.
Combined with the reflective influence of Mercury retrograde, this final new moon of the year is a powerful time to revise, reassess, and do a careful inventory of the past year. Mula new moon gives penetrating insight and clear diagnosis of problems that may seem unsolvable. Now is the time to consciously release the past and open to the new possibilities that are unfolding.
